A campaign to increase the number of allotments in Wirral could be about to get a £127,000 boost from the Council.
Following concerns that there are now more than 1,000 people waiting for an allotment, a working group of councillors and the Wirral Allotments Society met to see how demand could be met.
That group recommended that the council looks to provide up to 1,000 extra plots around the Borough, using disused council land or expanding existing allotment sites where possible.
Councillor Tom Anderson (Conservative, Greasby, Frankby, Irby Ward) chaired the working group and is backing the bid for cash.
Cllr. Anderson said: “It’s clear from existing plot holders, and those waiting for a plot, that the council has not paid enough attention to this issue.
“The Covid-19 pandemic has led to more interest from people who would like to grow more of their own food.
“The Allotments Act of 1908 also requires councils to meet demand for allotments – I’m really grateful to those residents who have contacted me about this and to the Wirral Allotments Society for helping us to start work to meet this demand.”
The request for £127,000 to expand and improve allotment sites at Cross Lane, Mosslands and Bebington Road will be considered at the next meeting of the Council’s Policy and Resources Committee on 11 November.
