Commenting on the appeal by Chester Zoo for assistance, Wirral Councillor Cherry Povall (Conservative, Clatterbridge Ward) said: “I have been contacted by many residents who are concerned and upset that our beloved Chester Zoo is in such financial difficulties due to the Coronanvirus pandemic.
“Last month, the Government announced an emergency support package of £14 million for zoos and aquariums but with so many needing help and the lockdown lasting longer, Chester Zoo, like Knowsley Safari Park, need extra support now.
“While they’ve launched their own appeals, and it’s great that so many supporters are helping out, the cost of looking after 35,000 animals at Chester Zoo is £465,000 a month.
“I have today written to the Animal Welfare Minister, Zac Goldsmith, asking for urgent action to enable larger zoos and safari parks to get support.”
